- 1). Purchase a Texas State fishing license. Buy online via the Texas Parks and Wildlife website or call 1-800-895-4248.
- 2). Choose a jetty side. Both the north and south jetties on South Padre Island offer similar fishing, so your choice may be dependent on ease of access or the amount of fishermen on the jetty.
- 3). Buy or catch some fresh bait. Ideal bait includes live shrimp and small live mullet. The bait shop can provide live shrimp, as well as a selection of dead fish baits. Catch live bait using a throw net or a small fishing rig.
- 4). Set up your fishing gear. Use a light- to medium-weight saltwater rod and reel. Choose a 15- to 25-pound test line. Attach a medium saltwater bobber and appropriate weight to the line, with approximately 6 to 8 feet of line from the bobber to the hook.
- 5). Find a secure spot on the jetty. Look for firm footing and areas with no loose rocks. Don't fish too close to the next angler. Search for areas with clear waters directly in front, with little weed and rock for snagging.
- 6). Bait up your hook. Use a size 8 hook. Push the hook through the back end of the shrimp, about a half inch before the tip of the tail. The shrimp should be able to move around.
- 7). Cast the line gently, so as not to break the shrimp off the line. Aim for around 20 to 30 feet from the jetty. Wait for the bobber to disappear, then strike firmly to set the hook in the fish.
- 8). Land the fish using a landing net. Wet your hands or use a towel to handle the fish. Take out the hook using pliers.
