- 1). Position the boat where you want to begin fishing and adjust the throttle to trolling speed. Drop the planer board into the water and feed out about 50 feet of line to let the board move away from the boat. If you wish, you can let out a board on each side of the boat.
- 2). Rig your fishing pole with your choice of bait or a lure and drop the line into the water. Watch the lure beside the boat for a moment to make sure the lure is moving correctly; adjust the boat speed if necessary. Let out line until the lure is as far behind the boat as you want to fish. Place the fishing pole in a rod holder.
- 3). Take hold of the fishing line and wrap a few turns of it into a small loop. Secure this line in the jaws of the line release. A planer board line release has a small spring clamp, usually with rubber jaws to grip the line. The clamp is connected to a quick-release clip to attach it to the planer board line. After gripping the fishing line in the clamp, secure the clip to the planer board line and let it drop into the water. The movement of the water will slide the line release clip down the line toward the planer board, pulling the line to the side. Let out line until the clip nears the planer board.
- 4). Add one or more additional fishing lines to the planer board line if desired, letting each line out a shorter distance to avoid tangling. When a fish strikes, the fishing line will be pulled out of the release clip so the fish can be played normally. If a small fish or a weak strike fails to pull the line free, just give the line a sharp tug to release it.
