- Clean the surface of the whirlpool bath regularly, at least every one to two weeks, depending on how often you use the bath. If the bath is used every day, the surface must be cleaned much more regularly than if it is only used a few times a month. Regular household cleaners can be used, as long as they are not abrasive and will not harm the surface of the bath. Read the label of the cleaner to see what types of surfaces it shouldn't be used on, if any, and check your tub's owner's manual to see what products the manufacturer recommends. Cleaning products in aerosol cans, disinfectants and strong detergents are generally discouraged for this type of cleaning because the ingredients could damage the surface of the whirlpool tub. Use abrasive cleaners only for stains that cannot otherwise be removed, and be sure to use the abrasive sparingly and with great care.
- Perform heavy-duty cleaning at least once a month to remove any buildup of bath products around the rim of the tub, such as soaps and shampoos, as well as to flush out the internal plumbing and jet system. Fill the tub with water that is heated to 140 degrees. It should be filled to a level that is above the top jets and high enough to cover any bathtub rings caused by residue. Add up to 1/4 cup dishwashing detergent to the water. Dishwashing detergent can be used for this process for most whirlpool bathtubs, but refer to your owner's manual for recommendations or warnings. Add up to 1/2 cup bleach to the water, but only if it is recommended in the instruction manual provided by the tub manufacturer.
Before you run the whirlpool, check your owner's manual to see what the manufacturer recommends about running the air induction while cleaning. Some will suggest that it needs to be turned off, while others recommend that it should be fully opened. Run the whirlpool bath for 10 to 15 minutes.
Drain and refill with cold water up to the same level as before. Let the whirlpool run for another 10 to 15 minutes to rinse the bath and system of any detergent. - Wipe down the surface of the bath after every use and after all cleanings. This will help prevent the growth of mold and mildew, and will remove some bath product residue before it has a chance to dry and harden on the surface.
