- 1). Remove any items from underneath the sink that are in the way of the lock nut. The plastic lock nut is located directly underneath the sink, wrapped around the strainer.
- 2). Twist the hot and cold water shut-off valves completely clockwise. These valves are located on the rear wall under the sink.
- 3). Unscrew the tailpiece slip nut, which is the next nut found below the lock nut. This nut anchors the drain tailpiece to the sink drain. Use an adjustable wrench to unscrew the slip nut, and disconnect the tailpiece from the drain above it.
- 4). Grip the plastic lock nut by two of its protruding tabs, using a pair of tongue-and-groove pliers. Twist the lock nut counter-clockwise to unscrew and remove it.
- 5). Position the end of a screwdriver down through one of the sink strainer holes from above, if the entire strainer turns when you twist the lock nut from underneath. Position a second screwdriver, crossing the first one, into another strainer hole. These screwdrivers prevent the strainer from moving while you turn the lock nut.
- 6). Unscrew and remove the lock nut from underneath the sink, using the tongue-and-groove pliers.
