- The trend to be more environmentally conscious has spilled over into home decor and design, including bathrooms. Though it used to be a challenge outfitting any room with all-natural decorative elements, linens and supplies, there are now hundreds of specialty product lines for those who want to make their homes eco-friendly. An all-natural bathroom doesn't have to cost a ton of money, and can be achieved fairly easily.
- The all-natural bathroom may seem limited when it comes to themes, but there are several ways you can decorate. An easy theme is the spa. To pull this off, choose white linens, add a few small plants or bamboo shoots, and set out baskets of soaps and toiletries. An Asian theme can be achieved by incorporating dark woods, red and gold accessories, and Asian artwork. To have a nautical-themed natural bathroom, use accessories that are naturally stained white, navy blue and cherry red. You can even stain them yourself to ensure that all of the elements in your bathroom are eco-friendly. If you paint your bathroom walls to match your chosen theme, use a paint that is natural, such as paints made by BioShield, EcoPaints or Real Milk Paints.
- Toothbrush holders, rinsing cups and tissue box covers are now made of sustainable materials, most commonly bamboo. Though they cost a bit more than bathroom accessories made of plastic or metal, bamboo accessories are all-natural, water-resistant and can withstand many years of use. When choosing towels, valances and a shower curtain for your bathroom, opt for natural fibers, such as organic cotton. To avoid using metal or plastic to hang your shower curtain, buy a curtain that is tab-topped.
- One of the most essential, but overlooked, parts of having an all-natural bathroom is the use of natural cleaners and deodorizers. To deodorize your toilets, pour ¼ cup of distilled white vinegar into them, allow it to sit for 30 minutes and then flush. Use an all-purpose bathroom cleaner made from natural plant extracts rather than one made from toxic chemicals. Such cleaners are readily available at most supermarkets and grocery stores. When trying to scent your bathroom, a good all-natural option is to occasionally light a soy candle that is made with essential oils. Even when it comes to soap, shampoo and shower gel, there are many artisan brands made from all-natural ingredients. Find them through a marketplace such as Etsy, 1000 Markets, the natural foods aisle of your supermarket or your local farmers market.
