One quite often hears or comes across the phrase a spiritual life, and its virtually always in the context of referring to a 'good' life, or the person being a good person, doing good things with their life.
Its unfortunate that the term spiritual has come to be associated with good things or people doing good deeds, as opposed to a bad person or people doing bad things.
The reason its unfortunate, is because it comes to bethought of in terms of people and actions that are essentially judgmental.
Reinforcing judgmental attitudes actually reinforces the very things, that a so called spiritual life actually is trying to get away from.
The other unfortunate thing that the term a spiritual life implies, is that it is somehow different or separate from a human, or normal life.
People will some times use the phrase or their own reality as a form of escapism, or as a form of superiority over people, a sort of other life big stick! Its also quite a difficult thing to argue against, because who would want to argue against some one being a good person, or doing good things.
There is a subtle, but hugely important issue here, which is that the term spiritual really refers to our own humanity, and that the 'journey', the spiritual path is really about discovering our own humanity, our own true selves.
Its about a journey of authenticity, in which the person really has the freedom to discover who they are, what they want to be, and discover the blocks that stop them getting there.
That sense of complete freedom is of course what frightens people, and often gets them rushing back to the idea that actually living a spiritual life is about doing good works, even if it wears them out in the process.
