- 1). Place the painting under a bright light, and examine the masking-tape residue up close with a magnifying glass. Continue to use the magnifying glass throughout the cleaning process.
- 2). Remove any of the masking tape residue that you can by slowly and carefully scraping it with your fingernail. Take care to avoid scraping the surface of the painting.
- 3). Dip a cotton swab into dry-cleaning solvent. Squeeze the tip to remove excess moisture.
- 4). Dab the area of the painting that contains masking-tape residue with the dry-cleaning solvent.
- 5). Dab the solvent on larger areas of the painting with a cotton ball until the residue has been removed.
- 6). Repeat Steps 3 through 5 until you can no longer see the masking-tape residue on the painting.
