- 1). Locate the drain plug assembly, which consists of a vertical metal strap referred to as the clevis strap, the pivot rod and the spring clip and retaining nut that are located at each end of the pivot rod, under the bathroom sink.
- 2). Grasp the retaining nut that secures the pivot rod to the inside of the drain pipe, called the tailpipe, and turn it in a counter-clockwise direction to remove. Attach a small pipe wrench or an adjustable wrench to the retaining nut and turn it in counter-clockwise direction if you can't remove the nut by hand.
- 3). Slide the retaining nut back from the tailpipe. Grasp the pivot rod in one hand and pull it away from the tailpipe to remove; the pivot seat and gasket will come out with the round bulb that is attached to the end of the pivot rod. Clean the area where the pivot rod was located by wiping it with a rag.
- 4). Pull the drain plug out from the sink flange hole, which is located at the top of the sink. Compare the old drain plug with the replacement to ensure the length, diameter and bottom loop is the same.
- 5). Slip the drain plug into the sink flange hole slowly. Watch the bottom loop of the replacement drain plug to make sure it lines up with the pivot rod that sits inside the tailpipe located under the sink.
- 6). Slide the pivot rod's bulb end back into the hole located at the side of the tailpipe. Slip the pivot seat and gasket back into the hole behind the bulb of the pivot rod.
- 7). Wrap Teflon plumber's tape clockwise three full rotations around the threads of the opening on the side of the tailpipe. Slide the retaining nut over the threads of the opening and turn it in a clockwise direction by hand. Affix the adjustable wrench or small pipe wrench to the retaining nut and tighten it. Don't over-tighten the retaining nut, which could cause it to crack or strip the tailpipe threads.
- 8). Dry test the drain plug assembly by pulling up and pushing down on the lift rod located near the faucet. Pull up on the lift rod to plug the sink and turn on the water. Push down on the lift rod to allow the water to drain while inspecting the tailpipe underneath the sink for any leaks.
