- 1). Back up all data that you wish to keep. This includes photos, documents, music and anything else that cannot be easily replaced. Using System Restore will erase your hard drive and reinstall Windows.
- 2). Open the Recovery Manager. In Windows Vista/ Windows 7, select "Start" and enter "recovery" in the search field. Select "Recovery Manager" from the list of results.
In Windows XP, select "Start" and select either "HP Tools," "PC Help & Tools" or "Hewlett-Packard>HP Pavilion PC Tools." Which menu you have depends on your computer model. Once you have navigated to one of these menus, select "HP PC System Recovery." - 3). Follow the on-screen instructions to proceed with System Recovery. If prompted to use the Microsoft System Restore utility, select "No" and then click "Next."
