- 1). Shut down the MacBook and disconnect any cords connected to it. Allow the computer to cool for 10 minutes before moving to the next step.
- 2). Turn the computer so the bottom is facing you and the text on the bottom reads in the correct direction. Press the latch button down to release the battery cover door. Remove the battery cover door and set it aside.
- 3). Pull upwards on the plastic tab to lift the battery out.
- 4). Place a finger on a metal component in the computer if you are not using a shock wrist guard. This will allow any static electricity in your body to discharge.
- 5). Locate the hard drive. It is beneath a bracket to the left of the battery slot.
- 6). Use the small, Phillips-head screwdriver to remove the screw in the center of the bracket. Put the screw in the bowl or dish.
- 7). Pull upwards on the plastic tab to lift the hard disk drive out of its slot. Put the bracket in the bowl or dish.
- 8). Pull the connector on the left side of the drive gently while holding the drive by its sides to detach it from the computer.
- 9). Remove the four mounting screws on the old disk drive if the replacement disk drive does not have the mounting screws.

Plug the connector into the left side of the new hard disk drive. - 11
Insert the new hard disk drive, angling it to go into the slot. Align the mounting screws. - 12
Put the bracket over the drive and use the screw to secure the replacement hard disk drive. - 13
Put the battery door latch in the open position. Slide the edge of the battery with a lip into the slot at an angle. Press the battery down gently until it settles in place. - 14
Return the battery door to its original position and press the battery door latch into place. Plug in the power adapter and start up the computer to confirm you installed the hard drive correctly.
