- 1). Install a hard drive cloning program on your laptop. There are free programs available for download, such as "HDClone," but many of these will have limitations on their use, such as not allowing you to use any remaining space on the hard drive to which you are cloning. Programs such as "Norton Ghost" cost money to use, but allow you to manage partitions of the new hard drive, and make use of any remaining space.
- 2). Connect an external hard drive to your computer. Most external hard drives connect through USB. Make sure to get an external drive that's at least as big as your laptop's HD, so that all the data can be transferred over.
- 3). Open the cloning program you selected. Follow any directions it gives you.
- 4). Choose your laptop's hard drive as the "Source," and the external hard drive as the "Target" when it asks for this information.
