- 1). Connect the leader to the fishing line using a Rapala knot. Attach your lure of choice to the leader. Connect the ballast to the cable.
- 2). Secure the rod to the downrigger. Using the hand crank or electrical crank, set the downrigger at the proper depth. In the summer, salmon can swim as deep as 150 ft., though later in the year they can come up to 25 ft., depending on the water temperature.
- 3). Troll at about two miles per hour. This speed may have to be varied depending on the type of lure used.
- 4). Reel the fish in when it is resting. Do this slowly and always keep tension on the line.
- 5). Position the net under the salmon when its head has reached the surface using a quick, darting motion. Once the fish is in the net, hoist it into the boat.
