- 1). Fill a 5-gallon bucket with 1 gallon of water. Add 2 cups of distilled white vinegar and 1/4 cup of liquid dish soap. Mix with a wooden spoon.
- 2). Use a soft scrub brush to scrub the mixture into the carpet fibers. Scrub in a circular motion. Continue scrubbing until all mold is removed from the carpet fibers.
- 3). Rinse the carpet thoroughly by blotting it with a clean cloth dampened in cool water.
- 4). Remove excess water from the carpet by patting with a dry towel.
- 5). Turn fans towards the carpet to help speed the drying process.
- 1). Visit your grocery store or home-improvement center. Rent a carpet-cleaning machine. You may be required to show two forms of ID and leave a deposit. If you return the carpet-cleaning machine in the same condition in which you received it, you will be refunded your deposit.
- 2). Remove all items, including furniture and rugs, from the carpet. Vacuum the carpet thoroughly to remove surface dirt and debris.
- 3). Read and follow all instructions and warnings printed on the carpet-cleaning machine.
- 4). Fill the water container with hot water. Fill to the indicator line and add 1 to 2 cups of distilled white vinegar. Replace the container onto the carpet-cleaning machine.
- 5). Begin at the area farthest away from the entrance and work toward it. This will keep you from walking over freshly cleaned carpet.
- 6). Squeeze the trigger on the carpet-cleaner, which releases the cleaning solution, while pushing the machine forward.
- 7). Pull the carpet-cleaner back in the same path as you pushed it. Pulling the machine back will scrub the carpet while removing the excess liquid from the carpet fibers.
- 8). Continue in this manner until you have thoroughly cleaned the carpet and removed the mold.
- 9). Turn fans towards the carpet to help speed the drying process.
