- 1). Turn off the water source for the loose toilet tank. This will stop any leaks and allow you to work inside the tank more easily. On the wall or floor behind the toilet tank will be a knob attached to a water supply valve. Turn this knob to the right to cut the water to the loose tank.
- 2). Gently pick up and remove the lid from the tank. Set it aside in a safe place, as these lids can be fragile. Flush the toilet tank by pressing the handle. Hold down the handle and allow the water inside to run out. Mop up any water left inside the tank with a sponge and towel.
- 3). Locate the tank bolts on the bottom inside of the tank. There may be two, three or four, depending on your tank. They will have either a flat head or Phillips-type head on the top. Insert the appropriate screwdriver into the first bolt and use this to hold it steady.
- 4). Take the adjustable wrench in your other hand and tighten the nut on the underside of the tank that you are holding steady with the screwdriver. Repeat this process for all of the bolts as needed.
- 5). Turn the water supply back on by turning the supply knob counterclockwise. Check the tank as it fills and ensure that there are no leaks and it stays steady.
- 6). Replace the tank lid.
