  The Dell Inspiron was released in late 2004 as a budget laptop that shipped standard with either a 30GB or 40GB Ultra ATA hard drive. Finding replacement drives is becoming more difficult as Ultra ATA is phased out in favor of SATA (Serial ATA) hard drives, but options remain.
  
  

Samsung Spinpoint

• The Samsung Spinpoint M5 160GB hard drive operates at 5400 RPM (an improvement over the default 4200 RPM) and represents a four- to five-times increase in storage capacity. It is available from vendors such as Newegg, Tiger Direct and others.
  
  

Western Digital

• The Western Digital WD3200BEVERTL 320GB 5400 RPM is one of the largest Ultra ATA hard drives available today. It operates at 5400 RPM (a speed increase over the original). It is available from a number of vendors including Newegg, Microcenter and Amazon.
  
  

Other Hard Drives

• There are several other options for upgrading or replacing the hard drive of a Dell Inspiron 1000 laptop. A replacement drive should be 2.5 inches, utilize 80-pin Ultra ATA interface and run between 4200 RPM or 5400 RPM. Compatible 7200RPM hard drives exist but may cause the laptop to run hot.
