If you want to establish, or re-establish your relationship with God, remember to come with the openness and expectancy of a little child.
When my nephew was about 5-years old, he was terrified of putting his face in the water while learning to swim.
The night before swimming lessons, my sister told him to ask God to help him.
Very earnest 5-year old prayers were said.
The next afternoon, as he climbed in the car after swimming lessons, he excitedly said, "Hurry up.
We have to go home so I can tell God I put my face in the water.
" He couldn't wait to tell God about his accomplishment and he thought the conversation had to be done in his bedroom.
There are three valuable lessons contained in this young child's experience.
1.
The spiritual relationship is exciting.
There is the potential for delight in all relationship.
This is true in the sacredness of the relationship with God.
Just as there are solemn times between any two people, there is also fun and delight.
2.
Be excited to share the fears and excitement of the day.
There is nothing too little to share with God.
I remember a priest telling a group of us that if you are concerned about your cabbages growing in the garden, then talk to God about your cabbages.
God takes delight in sharing your day.
Speak to him or her just as you would a friend.
Go ahead and send text messages, short comments, throughout the day.
3.
Having a particular place designated for special spiritual time, although not necessary, is helpful.
There are special places we enjoy sharing with those we are close to.
The same is true for the spiritual relationship.
Having a place or time you have designated as your prayer time assists you in calming your mind and heart for this communication.
The ultimate goal is to "pray always" which simply means to be in continual awareness that you are always in relationship with the Divine.
The spiritual relationship is not any more difficult than any relationship in your life.
In fact, it just may be easier.
The Divine part in this relationship wants to be with you.
God is always there.
You are the one who forgets.
The only doubts will be on your part.
Take time to communicate with God.
Share your life just as you would with a friend.
Begin with small things.
Take time to listen.
Your relationship will grow.
