- 1). Lay out the gate on the ground, dry-fitting the hinges and latch to get the exact width of your opening.
- 2). Locate the position of the posts, based on the opening needed, and where you want the gate to be in the yard.
- 3). Dig the post holes in a circular pattern six inches wider than the posts. The depth of the hole will depend on the frost line in your area and the weight of the gate you will be attaching, but should be at least 24 inches deep. Make the shape of the hole wider at the bottom, in the shape of a bell.
- 4). Set the posts in the holes. Mix concrete and water in a bucket, as per manufacturer's directions and pour concrete in the holes to 2 inches below the grade. Check to make certain the posts are plumb in all directions. Recheck for plumb as the concrete sets up. Let the concrete dry overnight.
- 5). Position the gate so the bottom hinge is approximately 3 inches from the finished grade. Drill holes to mount the hinges on the post. Screw the hinges onto the gate.
- 6). Screw the latch on the opposite post in its proper position, and attach the latch hardware to the gate.
