- 1). Cut the lead bathtub drainpipe with a hacksaw just below the waste and overflow connection and at the connection to the main sewer pipe.
- 2). Use a screwdriver to loosen the metal bands on the rubber couplings. Slide one coupling halfway over the bottom of the waste and overflow tee and the other halfway over the sewer line connection. Tighten the metal bands only over the tee and sewer line.
- 3). Hold the new P-trap with one hand. Use a measuring tape to find the distance from the inside of the PVC P-trap hubs to the bottom of the waste and overflow tee and sewer connections. Cut the two pieces of pipe with a hacksaw.
- 4). Brush the inside hubs of the P-trap and the outside pipe connection ends with PVC primer. Apply PVC glue to the same parts and join them together.
- 5). Insert the PVC pipe into the rubber couplings. Tighten the metal bands of the couplings over the new PVC pipe. Run water in the bathtub and check for leaks.
