- 1). Set the two 16-inch pieces (sides) on a worktable. Make marks at 11 1/2 and 12 inches. The area above the line at 12 inches is the top of the tool chest. Place the framing square on the marks and draw lines across the material.
- 2). Apply glue to the 16-inch edges of the 31-inch piece and secure it between the sides as the back of the tool chest with the finish nails. Next, glue three edges of the 31 by 11 1/2-inch pieces (shelves). Secure them between the lines and the bottom of the tool chest with the finish nails. Clean up the glue with a damp cloth.
- 3). Put some glue on the ends of the 10-inch pieces (drawer sides) and secure them on the ends and between the 31-inch pieces (front/back drawers) to create drawer box frames measuring 31 by 11 1/2 inches. Glue all four edges of the 30 by 10-inch pieces (drawer bottoms) and secure them inside the drawer box frames with the finish nails.
- 4). Install the drawer slides according to the instructions provided by the manufacturer, which will be different depending upon the manufacturer you choose. Leave a 1/2-inch space between the drawers when installing them in the tool chest.
- 5). Place the 12 by 32-inch piece (top of lid) and the 16 by 32-inch piece (front of lid) on a worktable. Set the two pieces side-by-side and secure the piano hinge to them with the provided screws. The piano hinge installs 1 inch from the ends of the lid pieces. Install the remaining piano hinge to secure the lid to the tool chest.
