- 1). Collect only organic brown compost items for the compost pile. These items are high in carbon and carbohydrates and very low in nitrogen. Examples of organic brown compost include dead leaves, straw or hay.
- 2). Bend a cattle panel into a circle. Attach the ends of the panel together using wire and wire nippers. Stand the panel on its side to form a cage-style compost bin. The compost bin should be 3 feet in diameter and 5 feet high.
- 3). Rake up the leaves and other organic brown compost items and pile them all into the wire cage compost bin at once.
- 4). Leave the compost to slowly decompose on its own.
