- 1). Make sure that your modem as well as your laptop and router are unplugged. Plug the first Ethernet cable to the Ethernet port of your modem, which is usually located at the back, beside the power port. Attach the other end to the "Internet" port of your router. Plug the second Ethernet cable to the WAN (Wide Area Network) or WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network) port of your router and the other end to the LAN (Local Area Network) port of your laptop (see tips).
- 2). Turn on the modem, router and laptop computer. Open an Internet browser and type the address, for example, 192.168.1.1 for a Linksys router. If you have a different brand of router, the documentation that came with it will have your address information. You will then be directed to the settings of the router. Configure the settings including the WEP or WPA key (see tips). Save your settings.
- 3). Remove the Ethernet cable from the LAN port of your laptop and the other end from the WAN or WLAN port of your wireless router. Make sure that the "wireless connection" of your laptop is enabled. Some laptops have a button for this that you can turn on or off.
- 4). Click on "Start" and then "Control Panel." Choose "Network Connections," double click on "Wireless Network Connections" and choose the name of your configured Internet connection. You will be asked to key-in the WEP or WPA key. As soon as you're done, the laptop computer will automatically detect the connection and you're good to go.
