- 1). Begin with a clean, dry surface that is waterproof. Wallboard or wood will require a prior waterproofing treatment. This usually involves a vapor barrier, weep system, metal lath and a mortar scratch coat.
- 2). Trim the stones to the specifications of the area being covered, by using a brick hammer or angle grinder with a diamond blade.
- 3). Apply mortar to the back of the stone and place it onto the surface, pressing enough that the mortar squeezes out from the sides of the stone, filling in the joints. Be sure to hold the stone for a few moments, so the mortar has a chance to set. Repeat this process with the remaining stones until the surface is covered. Grout the joints with the remaining mortar.
- 4). Allow the mortar to set for a few hours---according to the manufacturer's instructions---then rake and clean the joints. Remove any excess mortar.
