- 1). Tear off a piece of emery cloth. Abrade the end of the pipe with the emery cloth to remove burrs and irregularities. Wipe the end of the pipe with a clean rag to remove grease, dirt and debris. Fit the pipe into the pipe fitting without glue; this "dry fitting" allows you to check the pipe's installation location.
- 2). Remove the pipe from the fitting. Unscrew the ABS solvent cement's cap. Slowly lift the cap to pull the solvent applicator from the canister; the solvent applicator is attached to the underside of the cap. Allow excess glue to drip from the applicator.
- 3). Brush the applicator around the exterior end of the pipe to apply a continuous coat of solvent cement. Brush the applicator around the interior end of the fitting to do the same. While the solvent is still wet, slip the pipe into the fitting.
- 4). Twist the pipe one-quarter turn. Hold the pipe and fitting in position for roughly 30 to 60 seconds. Allow the joint to cure undisturbed according to the solvent cement manufacturer's recommendations.
- 1). Abrade the ends of drainpipes with the emery cloth and clean the pipes with a rag. Insert a screwdriver into the flexible drainpipe fitting's screw slot. Turn the screw counterclockwise to loosen the fitting's band clamp. Use the screwdriver to loosen the opposite band clamp. Alternatively, use a nut driver to turn hex screws.
- 2). Slip a pipe into one of the fitting's open ends. Twist and push the fitting until the pipe's end butts against the fitting's internal rib. Slip the remaining pipe into the opposite side of the fitting and push the pipe into the fitting until it butts against the fitting's internal rib.
- 3). Position the band clamps within their respective recesses around the fitting's circumference. Rotate the clamps until the screw are easily accessible; for example, screws should face away from the interior face of a wall cavity.
- 4). Slip a screwdriver's tip into a screw's slot or a slide a nut driver over a hex screw. Turn the screw clockwise to tighten the clamp and secure the fitting to the pipe. Use the screwdriver or nut driver to twist the opposite screw and tighten the remaining clamp.
