- 1). Tape plastic drop cloths over the doors that lead to other areas of your home. Although you are not completely sanding your floors, it is possible to make a mess while buffing the floor. Covering the doors will prevent the dust from getting into other areas.
- 2). Wear a respirator, ear plugs and safety glasses.
- 3). Vacuum the floor. The floor should not have any dirt on it when you begin buffing.
- 4). Remove old wax from the floor with mineral spirits and rags to prepare the floor for buffing.
- 5). Place 120-grit screens on the floor buffer. Turn on the floor buffer. Begin buffing in the center of the room. This will give you a chance to practice buffing the floor in a place that will probably later be covered by a rug. Run the buffer evenly across the floor until you have covered the entire floor.
- 6). Vacuum the floor so it is free of dust. Use a damp rag to remove trace particles of dust.
- 7). Apply wax or polish to the floor per the manufacturer's directions.
