- 1). Locate a stud on the wall where you want to install a safety rail. Once located, mark the wall with a pencil or marker. If tile prevents you from finding a stud, take your best guess based on the construction of the home.
For instance, if this is a second floor bathroom, locate a stud on the first floor directly below and take your best estimate on where that same stud is located above. If this is not possible, take note that studs are typically 16 inches apart (depending on the style of construction). So try locating other studs in the bathroom and determine the spacing between them to locate a stud. - 2). Place the railing on the wall and mark where holes are needed for mounting screws.
- 3). Drill holes about 1/2 inch deep.
- 4). Place plastic anchors in holes. Typically, anchors are provided with the rail, but you may need to buy them separately.
- 5). Line up the rail over the anchors. Hold it in place as tight as possible and then put screws in.
- 6). Make sure the rail is secure. Then, put bathroom caulk or sealant around the edges to prevent water from getting in. Allow to dry for at least four hours before using the shower or tub.
