- 1). Download the most current version of the operating system from the Ubuntu.com website or any popular torrent hosting website. Save the downloaded file in a location you can easily find again on your hard drive. Major Ubuntu updates are released every six months and are reflected in the name of the file. For example, Ubuntu 10.04 was released in the fourth month of 2010.
- 2). Install disk-burning software on your computer. This type of program is available commercially in products such as Nero Burning Suite or it may be downloaded from open source and shareware websites. Make sure that the version you use is capable of burning ISO files. Insert the flash drive into any available USB slot. The computer should display a notice that a new device has been installed.
- 3). Start the disk-burning program and look for an option that says something like "Write disk image to disk" or "Burn ISO file." Click the option and you will be asked to select a disk image to copy and a drive to write to. Select the USB flash drive instead of the default disk recorder. Click "OK" or "Burn Image."
- 4). Restart the computer. At the first screen of information, press the DEL key after the memory check. This may be a different key or keys on some machines, such as the ESC or even CTRL-HOME. The correct key or keys to press should be displayed on your screen. Once the BIOS menu appears, select the option that most closely means "advanced BIOS options." Select the option for "Boot Order" or "First Boot Device" and set it to "Boot From USB Device." If the option is available, set this to "Boot from USB drive," or "Boot from flash drive."
- 5). Press the F10 function key and you will be asked whether to save the setting and restart. Press the Y key and your computer will restart just as if it had just been powered on. Watch carefully for the computer to ask you to "Boot from other drive" or something to that effect. Press Y or ENTER if it does. Not all computers will verify that you are booting from a removable device so do not be alarmed if yours does not. Your computer will now boot from the USB flash drive.
