- There are a plethora of motherboard manufacturers, but only two main processor manufacturers: AMD and Intel. Every motherboard, regardless of manufacturer, has a socket that will accept a processor from one of these two brands.
- Each brand has a few different socket types to accommodate various processor types. Your motherboard and processor will be generally compatible if their socket types match. See the specifications for the parts you are interested in to find out which processor socket type they are.
- Common AMD socket types include AM2, AM2+ and AM3. Older models include Socket A, Socket 754, Socket 939 and Socket 940.
- Common Intel socket types include LGA775, LGA1156 and LGA1366. Older models include PGA370, PGA423 and Socket 479.
