- 1). Select the pedals you want to use. In most cases, road bike pedals come with cleats. You need to match these cleats to a pair of cycling shoes. On a road bike, you can actually use road or mountain style pedals, depending on how you use your bike.
- 2). Choose a lightweight pedal if you have performance in mind. You might want to go with a mountain style pedal on your road bike if you commute, ride through mud and rough terrain or you need to walk around in your cycling shoes. The cleats used with mountain bike pedals tend to fit recessed into the bottom of your shoes, making walking easier (and quieter) than the road option. Road cleats typically extend out from the bottom of your shoe, hitting the ground with each step you take.
- 3). Compare the number of holes at the bottom of the cycling shoes you are considering with the number of holes that accept screws on your cleats. Most road style cleats use a three-bolt pattern, which require shoes with three bolts situated in a triangular pattern. Mountain cleats generally use a side-by-side two-bolt pattern. Some shoes accommodate both two-and three-bolt setups.
