- 1). Measure the toilet's elbow neck (where the old ring was) with a tape measure to determine the size wax ring you will need.
- 2). Decide on how thick the ring needs to be. If your toilet flange rests below floor level, you will need a double-thick wax ring. If it is at floor level, a standard ring will work fine.
- 3). Purchase a ring that will meet your needs. A type of ring with a horn protruding from it is meant to solve leak problems. A basic type of wax ring also is available that does not have a horn. It is up to you which type to choose, but some plumbers will indicate that the horn can get hung up on the auger.
