- 1). Verify that the monitor is tightly plugged into the wall or surge protector. Check the connection between the wall or surge protector and the monitor and make sure the power cable is firmly plugged into the monitor. Check your surge protector and make sure the power switch is turned on. Look for any wall switches that may control power to the outlet you are using. Plug in a known good appliance into the power outlet and make sure it turns on. Press the power button on the monitor; verify it is in the "on" position.
- 2). Inspect for bent pins on the cable ends. Computer monitors connect to the computer with a 9-pin CGA/EGA, 15-pin VGA connector, a DVI or an HDMI cable. Make sure that the pins on the cable are straight on the part of the connector that leads to the monitor. Verify that the cable is firmly connected and screwed into the video connector on the computer. Verify that the connection to the monitor is also tightly connected. If the pins are bent, unplug the monitor and use a pair of tweezers or needle-nose pliers to gently align them with the other pins, so that it matches the pattern on the computer video connector.
- 3). Press the input button on your monitor if it is equipped with one. Make sure that the input is configured to match the type of cable or connector that is being used between the monitor and computer. Consult your monitor manual if you are unsure of how to configure inputs.
- 4). Connect the monitor to a computer that is currently working correctly. If you know a computer is currently working, test the monitor on computer to see if the monitor works in that configuration. Try testing a working monitor on the current computer and see if it turns on correctly. This will identify whether the problem is related to the video card or computer rather than the monitor.
- 5). Check the monitor resolution settings if your image looks skewed or the image is too large or small for the screen. In Windows, right-click on the desktop. Click on "Personalize" or "Properties," then click "Display Settings" or the "Settings" tab. Slide the resolution marker to the right or left and experiment with the results by pressing "Ok." The previous setting will revert back in 15 seconds if you do not accept the new monitor resolution. Try different monitor resolutions till you find one that is comfortable for you.
