- 1). Fill the outdoor tank to the furnace with fuel oil. This typically involves a call to a fuel supply company, which will dispatch a tanker truck to the residence.
- 2). Hold the bucket below the bleed valve under the furnace. The valve looks like a brass nozzle with a hole in the bottom and can usually be found installed in the fuel line between the furnace and the oil filter.
- 3). Turn the valve counterclockwise a half turn with a wrench. You'll hear sputtering and popping noises as the valve expels air in the fuel line. When the sound of air subsides, open the valve another half turn until oil begins to drip from the valve to the bucket.
- 4). Turn the valve clockwise to shut off the bleed valve.
- 5). Switch the wall thermostat control to the "On" position and press the ignitor button on the side of the furnace to restart.
