- 1). Prepare the Shop-Vac for use by placing the correct filter in the machine. Your vacuum cleaner probably already has a cartridge filter and it is most likely for use with dry pickup. You may need a different filter for wet pickup. The Shop-Vac has fine particle filters and drywall filters, but the Shop-Vac website warns against hazardous materials pickup. There is an Ultra-Web cartridge filter for wet or dry pickup and an anti-microbial filter to remove allergens. Check the instruction book and the online filter guide for the model number of your Shop-Vac and filters available (see Resources).
- 2). Select an attachment for the job. The Shop-Vac comes with several attachments for use in different settings. Other attachments are available, including gutter-cleaning equipment for the blower models. There is a turbo nozzle that works for large pickups around the shop and garage.
- 3). Plug the Shop-Vac into a wall outlet and turn it on with the switch located near the top of the machine. Vacuum by running the attachment over the surface you want to clean. This vacuum cleaner will pick up water safely because the motor is at the top of the machine, independent of the barrel.
- 4). Unplug the Shop-Vac and open the clamps on the side to remove the top unit from the barrel and empty the contents. The cartridge filters are washable and re-usable, and are friction-fit for easy removal. Wash the barrel and dry with a towel. Wash the filter and leave the unit open to dry. Once the unit is dry, reassemble by placing the top on the barrel and closing the side clamps. Store this vacuum cleaner in a dry location.
