- 1). Pull out old nails using a cats claw nail remover and a hammer. Place the nail remover on the edge of the nail head, and strike it with a hammer. This will force the nail remover under the nail.
- 2). Pull back on the nail puller to force the nail out of the wood.
- 3). Repeat this process to remove all nails from the decking.
- 1). Use a pry bar to remove each section of decking.
- 2). Place the pry bar in between the joints of the deck boards where they are nailed into the joints. Strike the pry bar with a hammer to force it into the joint.
- 3). Pull back on the pry bar to lift up the section of decking. Pry up along the length of the decking until you have removed the board.
- 4). Turn the board upside down, and use a hammer to pound out the nails.
- 5). Place the board right-side up, and use the claw side of the hammer to pull out the nails. Place the board back in its original position.
- 1). Insert a deck screw into the nail hole.
- 2). Secure the deck screw to the deck board and joist.
- 3). Place the power drill on top of the screw, and press the trigger on the drill.
- 4). Stop tightening the screw when it is flush with the deck board.
- 5). Insert screws into the remaining nail holes, and secure them to complete the project.
