- 1). Decide if you'll use white paint and a paintbrush or a basketball-court stenciling kit. Basketball line-stenciling kits come with adhesive tape that is pre-cut for installation. Pre-cut stenciling kits can cost anywhere from around $50 to several hundred dollars.
- 2). Decide if you want a high school-, college-, or NBA-size court. Find the dimensions of your desired court (helpful diagrams can be found at http://www.betterbasketball.com/basketball-court-dimensions), and make sure you have enough space to install the court you've chosen.
- 3). Mark off the dimensions of the court. Most of these dimensions will be measured in relation to the basketball hoop. Use a measuring tape and chalk to mark the baselines, the sidelines, the tip of the three-point line, the distance from the three-point line to the sidelines, and the free-throw line. This will provide a rough outline of your court. Again, make sure you'll have enough room.
- 4). Paint lines on the court with white paint and a paintbrush. Again, chalk can be used to initially draw these lines on the court.
- 5). Follow the directions that came with your stenciling kit, if you are using one. Generally, you will lay out the lines on your outdoor surface, make sure they line up properly with the appropriate dimensions, and tape down the lines. If desired, paint can be rolled over these lines to give the lines a different color or to renew any wearing lines.
- 6). Monitor your outdoor court. You may need to perform maintenance every few years due to the general wear and tear from use or from rain, snow, and wind. Repainting over the existing paint or re-stenciling over the existing tape will do.
