I am sure you are asking, aren't all goal setting strategies the same.
Well, no, they are not.
Sure all goal setting strategies get you to think about short, medium and long term goals and to write them down, to read them every day.
Yes, those things are all very useful but why do I keep failing? Why do I not reach my goals? The short answer is you have taken your eye off the ball.
You have abandoned your goals! You have put the paper the goals were written on in a draw someplace and have forgotten about them or worse yet thrown them in the trash.
Absolutely, you must write your goals out.
Write them down on a piece of paper or a credit card size white plastic card and carry them with you.
Have them in your wallet or purse.
Read them whenever you open your wallet or have a free moment...
Have your goals tapped to your bathroom mirror, the fridge door and the door leaving your house.
By doing this you will be constantly reminded of your goals and that will keep you on track.
You also need an accountability partner.
A person who will, on a daily basis, hold you accountable for what you have done to achieve your goals.
Especially your short term goals.
It's very difficult to reach your medium and long term goals if you are off track on your short term goals.
You must also attach dates to your goals.
Now you have mile markers that you know you have to reach.
Just like a journey across country you have mile post where you will stop for gas, food and yes the bathroom!!! Now you have mile markers that reinforce you have attained a goal.
Reward Yourself when you have reached a mile post, absolutely reward yourself.
You have achieved a goal, what a great moment; celebrate the win in your life, and of course the bigger the win the bigger the celebration.
One more thing...
Goals can change over time but usually a well thought out, well written goal will stand the test of time.
More often it's the date you have wrong.
So, instead of completely changing your goal have you simply missed a date? The test is: are you still on track with your short and medium term goals.
If the answer to that is yes, then I would suggest you need a different time line.
Changing a time line is much easier and more consistent with what you originally envisioned than changing a goal.
