- 1). Ensure the space where you wish to place the pergola is level by placing a carpenter's level on the area.
- 2). Mark the areas on the wall above the garage door where the mounting brackets will be installed. Mount three knee braces above the garage to support the pergola beams.
- 3). Drill two holes into each knee brace, one hole on the top and one hole on the bottom. Insert a steel bolt into each drilled hole to hold the knee brace to the garage.
- 4). Mount two 2-by-3-inch wood pieces over the knee brace. Drill 4-inch screws into the wood and through the knee brace for a strong mount.
- 5). Space 10 2-by-2s over the 2-by-3s as the rungs for the pergola. Space them out 10 inches apart and mount them onto the 2-by-3s using 3-inch deck screws.
