- 1). Choose an appropriate remote. Try to buy a remote made by the same manufacturer of your garage door opener if possible. At the least, read the documentation that comes with a remote you are considering buying or ask a sales representative to ensure the device will work with your garage door opener.
- 2). Locate the learn button. Most universal garage door remotes have a learn button that varies in position and color depending on the brand. There may also be a learn button on the garage door opener. If you are having difficulty finding it, try removing the cover of your remote.
- 3). Press and hold the learn button until the light on the remote blinks. While it is blinking, test the remote by pushing the open/close button. If the garage door moves and the light turns off, the remote is programmed. If the light continues to blink, push the open/close button again until the garage door responds.
