- 1). Turn off your laptop and place it upside-down on a clean, stable surface. Remove all power and data cables. Remove the battery from your computer and set it aside.
- 2). Identify the RAM access panel; on some laptops it is marked with a small symbol that looks like a comb. If you're not sure which panel accesses the RAM bay, consult your laptop's user guide. Use your Phillips-head screwdriver to remove the screw or screws holding the access panel in place. Remove the panel and set it aside.
- 3). Use your index finger to tilt the RAM DIMM up at a 45-degree angle. Grasp the DIMM and pull it gently out of its socket. If your laptop has two DIMM slots, repeat this process on the second DIMM. Older laptops feature metal clamps on either side of the RAM DIMM; pull these to either side to disengage them.
- 4). Insert your replacement DIMM or DIMMs into the slot(s) until it clicks into place. Lower the DIMMs to a horizontal position. (There is only one way the DIMMs will go into the slot, so don't worry about inserting them backward.) Replace the access panel and screw it back down.
- 5). Replace the battery. Turn your laptop over, lift the lid and press the power button. Go through your normal boot process to make sure everything is working properly.
