- 1). Tighten the bolts on the swing set and check every fixture and fitting to make sure they are in good condition and secure. Replace any worn rope or broken fittings.
- 2). Power wash the swing set. Rent or buy a power washer. Place deck washer in a companion bucket with water and use the power washer to remove dirt, grime and mildew from the swing set. Hold the wand close enough to clean the wood but not close enough to gouge the wood. Clean all fixtures and fittings at the same time. Allow the wood to dry thoroughly for 24 hours.
- 3). Sand the wood in any area that is at all rough. The swing set should be able to be touched at any location by hands without leaving splinters or discomfort. Use an orbital sander and several grades of sandpaper until the finish is smooth and ready to paint.
- 4). Tape around the edges of anything you do not want to paint. It is best to paint opaque stains with a paint brush so you should not have to mask for over spray.
- 5). Stain from the top to the bottom so that any drips run down where you can see them. Use an opaque stain as the finish because it will last the longest and will provide a uniform color. Select a high-quality stain that has UV protection, this will make the finish last longer. Two coats is best. Allow the first coat to dry overnight.
