- 1). Sweep loose dirt and debris from the driveway with a push broom. Wet down the driveway with water from a garden hose. Fill a bucket with hot water and a few squirts of dish soap. Scrub the entire driveway with a long-handled scrub brush to remove dirt and stains. Rinse the driveway well with plain water and allow it to dry completely.
- 2). Mix your homemade sealer in a large bucket. Stir the ingredients thoroughly with a large paint stirrer so that nothing settles at the bottom of the bucket.
- 3). Pour a generous amount of sealer from the bucket directly onto the driveway surface. Begin working at the back of the driveway, moving your way to the front. Pour enough sealer to cover about a 20-foot section at one time. This may take some experimentation to get the right amount. The key is to not pour too much sealer at once before it has a chance to be spread out. The sealer may begin to dry up before you are able to spread it.
- 4). Spread the sealer onto the driveway. Use a long-handled paint roller so that you can work standing up. Smooth the sealer onto the driveway in a thin, even coating, overlapping your roller strokes. The sealer should cover the surface without pooling in any spots.
- 5). Allow the sealer to dry until is not tacky to the touch. This may take several hours, depending on the weather. Apply a second coat of sealer to the driveway, if you wish. Although a second coat is not necessary, a second coat will ensure optimal protection.
- 6). Allow the second coat of sealer to dry completely. Avoid any foot or vehicle traffic on the driveway for at least 24 hours but preferably 48 hours.
