- Gas-powered cold water pressure washers are used for everything from occasional light work around a residence to everyday industrial use in a shipyard. Prices vary as much, ranging from a couple of hundred dollars to tens of thousands of dollars, as of 2010.
- Gas-powered hot water pressure washers are mostly used in commercial and industrial applications, such as cleaning petroleum-based products from any of a number of surfaces.
- Generally, electric pressure washers are the lowest priced type of pressure washer, followed by gas-powered cold water washers and gas-powered hot water pressure washers, respectively.

Electric pressure washers are outfitted with alternating current electric motors, whereas gas-powered pressure washers are outfitted with motors that use gas, air and oil. Electric motors on most electric pressure washers are rated in fraction amounts of horsepower, whereas gas-powered motors are rated in whole number amounts of horsepower.
