- 1). Gauge the depth of the water to be jug fished. Use depth or fish finders to gather this information. Tie lines to the jug handles of the water depth, minus 12 inches. Push the line to the bottom end of the jug handles and ensure the caps are on the jugs to prevent water from entering the container.
- 2). Tie 4/O to 6/O barbed hooks to the end of the fishing line with Palomar knots. Add two to three 1 oz. split shot sinkers 6 to 8 inches above the hooks.
- 3). Place the catfish smelly baits onto the hooks and set out with the jugs and lines in the boat. Release the jugs in a row, approximately every 10 to 20 feet. Drift along with the jugs as they bounce and drift with the water current.
- 4). Watch for the jugs to tip up in the water, indicating catfish strikes. Go the jug that is tipping and pull up the fish, retrieve and rebait. Set the jug back into the water.
