- 1). Make sure the gun is unloaded. Check to ensure there is no ammunition in the chamber of the gun or in the clip, magazine or cylinder depending on the type and style of weapon.
- 2). Thread a cleaning patch tip onto a cleaning rod. Insert a new cleaning patch into the holder.
- 3). Open a bottle of cleaning solvent such as Hoppes Number 9 and dip the cleaning patch into the solvent so that the patch is completely saturated.
- 4). Run the rod and patch up and down the length of the barrel to thoroughly coat the inside of the barrel and any powder debris. Repeat the process with a dry patch to remove any debris in the barrel, repeat until a patch is run through clean.
- 5). Apply solvent to several patches and thoroughly wipe down accessible parts of the breech and receiver. Repeat until patches show little to no signs of residue.
- 6). Apply gun oil to a clean patch on the cleaning rod and coat the inside of the barrel, also apply the oil to the breech and receiver. Using a clean rag, thoroughly wipe down the exterior of the gun with gun oil to remove finger prints and apply a protective barrier against moisture.
