- 1). Check the batteries if the device fails to turn on. Be sure the "Positive" (+) side is facing the positive terminal, and the "Negative" (-) side is facing the negative terminal. Recharge the batteries if they're rechargeable, or replace them if they're not. Clean the battery terminals using an abrasive tool, such as high-grit sandpaper, to remove corrosive build up. Check the camera's charging cable for shorts, breaks or other defects that might interfere with charging. Order a new charger if any problems are found. Check the charging port on the A550 to make sure the pin in the middle isn't bent or missing.
- 2). Remove the SD card if it fails to work. Check the locking tab on the side, and slide it to the "Unlocked" position, otherwise camera will be unable to save images to the card. Insert the card into your laptop, right-click on the listing under "Computer" and choose "Format." This will erase all the data on the card, and may remove whatever is causing it to lock up. Wait for formatting to finish, then insert it into the camera and take a picture. Replace the card if it still fails to work.
- 3). Replace the lithium-ion button battery located in a small plastic slot near the two AA-batteries; this will get rid of the perpetual "Date/Time" menu that flashes when you turn on the A550.
- 4). Clean the lens with a cotton swap and rubbing alcohol if the images are blurry. Skin oil and other debris will cause poor focus and light smears, both resulting in poor images. Increase the ISO if the image are too dark by pressing "Menu," then selecting "ISO." Decrease the ISO if the images are too bright or have a lot of noise. Move closer to the subject if the flash doesn't adequately illuminate it. Set the camera to "Macro" mode to take clear close-up pictures by pressing the "Down" button.
