- By the end of its production run, the ThinkPad R series was running on the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system, although some of the computers had its immediate predecessor Windows XP instead. Thanks to the T series still being in production, Lenovo bases it on Windows 7. Also, while the T-series dual-core processors are either Intel Core i5 and i7, most R-series laptops have their immediate processors, the Core 2 Duo.
- Although the system memory of both ThinkPad series are based on DDR3 SDRAM, that of the T series has an access speed of 1,333 megahertz. The R series is slower at 1,066 MHz. You have six hard disk drive choices regarding the R series: 80GB, 160GB, 250GB or 320GB of storage space with a rotational speed of 5,400 rpm; and 160GB or 200GB hard drives with full disk encryption, both of which have a 7,200-rpm drive rotation. The T series, on the other hand, is restricted to a 250GB 5,400-rpm, 320GB and 500GB 7,200rpm, or 128GB solid state hard drive.
- Both the R series and T series have wireless network adapters. The former, however, adheres to the 802.11b/g pair of standards from the International Electrical and Electronics Engineers association, while the latter makes it a trio with the 802.11b/g/n. Although the R series and T series possess an ExpressCard slot, that of the R series is 34 mm wide, while that of the T series is 54 mm.
- The R-400 has a 14.1-inch widescreen display, with choices between a 1,280-by-800-pixel and 1,440-by-900-pixel resolution. The R-500 has a 15.4-inch widescreen display instead; choices of resolution consist of 1,280 by 800 pixels and 1,680 by 1,050 pixels. The T-series ThinkPad is smaller than the R-400 and R-500 with its 14-inch high-definition widescreen, which supports a 1,366-by-768-pixel resolution.
