- 1). Determine the configuration of your canopy. For a full bed option, place curtain rods the width of your bed above the foot and the head of the bed. Place two, longer rods along the sides of your bed, extending the entire length of the bed to create a box of curtain rods. Choose a rounded option using a wire tension rod above the top third of your bed to add interest without making you feel claustrophobic.
- 2). Create a simplified version by applying two small rods along the sides of your bed, extending one third of the way from the head of the bed towards the foot of the bed. Install another rod across the bed to join the other rods and form a small box about one-third the size of your bed. Once you have selected your configuration, install the rod or tension wire to the ceiling, using the brackets commonly attached to the wall to attach your system to the ceiling. Use toggle bolts to attach your brackets if possible, especially if your fabric is heavy, to avoid having the canopy fall. Use the additional screw in the bracket to hold the curtain rod firmly in place.
- 3). Select curtains that are two to three times as wide as the curtain rod, using several panels and sewing them together lengthwise if necessary. Choose a length of curtain that allows for contact with the floor for a more modern look or up to a foot of fabric to pool at the bottom for a romantic feel. Apply the hooks to your curtain panels and mount the curtains on your rod or tension wire.
