- 1). Measure the area around the fireplace you want to cover.
- 2). Cut the 2-inch-by-4-inch studs with the saw and secure them to the ground with the framing gun and nails. You are placing the 2-inch-by-4-inch studs in a box style in front of the fireplace.
- 3). Measure the distance from the top of the stud (placed on the ground) to the ceiling. Cut the 2-inch-by-4-inch to the measured distance.
- 4). Install and secure the stud vertically so it's resting on top of the stud on the ground and resting against the fire place. Secure the stud with framing nails to the ground stud. Drill in concrete screws into the stud holding the fireplace. Install a vertical stud on all the corners and every 16 inches thereafter.
- 5). Place the drywall and cut to proper size with the utility knife. Secure the drywall to the vertical studs, with drywall screws every 6 inches starting from the corner.
- 6). Finish the drywall with compound over all the edges and screw holes. Apply the compound with a spatula. After the drywall is properly finished, you can paint it or finish it to your liking.
