Alaska has more than 34,000 miles of coastline and countless freshwater lakes, rivers and streams. The waters are populated with dozens of species of freshwater and saltwater game fish, with the two most popular being halibut and salmon. Of the five species of salmon, Chinook are the most sought after, while coho are the most plentiful, have the longest runs and put up the best fight when hooked. Although the best times to fish depend on the species, overall June, July and August are the best months for fishing in Alaska. - Halibut are the most sought-after saltwater game fish in Alaska. A member of the flounder family, halibut commonly reach weights of more than 100 lbs., with average weights of 15 to 30 lbs. Although halibut are found in deep water, more than 3,000 feet in some cases, they move into the shallow areas of the bays and straits to feed. The best time of year to catch halibut in Alaska is late May through September to October, with June being the most productive. One of the best areas in Alaska to catch halibut is the coastal waters around Homer.
- Chinook, also known as king salmon, grow to the largest of all the salmon species, with records topping 100 lbs. Although the best fishing dates vary by area, June is one of the best months for king salmon in areas closest to the coast. This early part of the season can see as many as 30,000 fish as they begin making their way back into the rivers from the sea.
- Coho, or silver salmon, as they are commonly called, are popular because they are the most aggressive feeders of all salmon species. Cohos average 10 to 20 lbs. and will readily take a variety of baits and lures. Once hooked, they are strong and aggressive fighters. Silvers begin returning from the sea in July, and can be caught just offshore, or as they enter the rivers and lakes to spawn. Although the runs and open seasons for silver salmon continue into fall, the peak month is August.
