How to Set Up Roaming Profiles in a Server 2000

    • 1). Decide which machine you want to use to create and store the shared folder. The shared folder can be located on the domain controller or any other computer in the domain.

    • 2). Open My Computer (also known as Windows Explorer) and click the drive in which you want to create a shared folder to store roaming user profiles.

    • 3). On the File menu, point to New and then click Folder. Type a name for the new folder and then press Enter.

    • 4). Right-click the new folder you just created and click Sharing. Click Shared As, type the name that you want to assign to the shared folder in the Share Name box and then click OK. Close Windows Explorer.

    • 5). Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools and then click Active Directory Users and Computers.

    • 6). Double-click the user account to which you want to assign a roaming profile and then click Profile.

    • 7). Type the complete path to the shared folder that contains the user's profile in the User Profile Path box. For example, let’s say the name of the server that has the shared folder is “ServerA” and the shared folder is named “Profiles.” You would type in “\\ServerA\Profiles\%username%” (without the quotation marks). Windows Server 2000 will automatically replace the variable %username% with the user’s actual account name. Click OK when you’re done.

    • 8). Repeat steps 6 and 7 above for each individual user’s roaming profile. When you’re done, close Active Directory Users and Computers.
