A Comparison of the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W150 With Canon 1100 IS

    Size Specifications

    • The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W150 is slightly smaller and lighter than the Canon PowerShot A1100 IS. While the Cyber-shot DSC-W150 has dimensions of 3.7 inches wide by 2.3 inches high by 0.9 inches deep and weighs 5 oz., the PowerShot A1100 IS has dimensions of 3.7 inches wide by 2.4 inches high by 1.2 inches deep and weighs 5.5 oz.

    Imaging Device and Resolution

    • For converting light into electrical charges, the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W150 and the Canon PowerShot A1100 IS both rely on charged-coupled device optical sensors that are 1/2.3 inches in size. However, while the Cyber-shot DSC-W150's optical sensor can capture images using 8.1 megapixels, or 8.1 million tiny squares of illumination, the PowerShot A1100 IS's optical sensor can capture images using 12.1 megapixels, or 12.1 million tiny squares of illumination. The higher pixel count of the PowerShot A1100 IS means that it can provide photos with a greater resolution, or level of detail.

    • Both the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W150 and the Canon PowerShot A1100 IS have optical viewfinders, which use mirrors to provide precise representations of what a camera's lens captures. In addition, both cameras rely on thin-film transistor display screens, which are active-matrix varieties of liquid-crystal displays. And while these screens offer the same resolutions, 230,000 pixels, the Cyber-shot DSC-W150's screen is larger at 2.7 diagonal inches. In comparison, the PowerShot A1100 IS's screen is 2.5 diagonal inches.

    Lens and Shutter

    • The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W150's lens consists of nine elements in seven groups and can provide a 35 mm-equivalent focal length of 28 mm to 140 mm. In comparison, the Canon PowerShot A1100 IS's lens consists of seven elements in five groups and can provide a 35 mm-equivalent focal length of 35 mm to 140 mm. While the Cyber-shot DSC-W150's lens has an optical zoom of 5x, the PowerShot A1100 IS's lens has an optical zoom of 4x. Both cameras can provide the same maximum shutter speed, 1/1600 seconds, which refers to how quickly the cameras can open and close their shutters for letting in light.
